Master Addictions Counselor (MAC)
A Master Addictions Counselor (MAC) include use of the MAC certification mark and recognition as a professional who has met high national standards for the practice of addictions counseling by the National Board For Certified Counselors (NBCC).
MAC coursework requirements to become certified require 12 graduate level semester hours (500 clock hours of addictions specific continuing education) that include several areas of study such as medical and psycho-social aspects of addiction, addictions assessment, and drug information and terminology. MAC's are required to have three years of supervised experience with clients in addition to other eligibility requirements.
Finally, the MAC must obtain a passing score the Examination for Master Addictions Counselors (EMAC). Renewal of certification requires remaining current in the field with proof of 100 continuing education hours with at least a quarter of which is in this specialty.
